Aleisir: RSF militia’s intensification of terrorist attacks to vandalize vital facilities is a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and Geneva Conventions
Portsudan, 20 January 2025 (SUNA)
Minister of Culture and Information, government spokesman Khalid Aleisir considered the practices of the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia and the intensification of its terrorist attacks to vandalize indispensable facilities in Sudan, by targeting dams and power stations, the latest of which were the attacks on the Merowe Dam and the Dongola power station on Saturday, a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit targeting vital facilities that provide basic services to civilians, such as water and power stations.
Aleisir said, “This criminal behavior jeopardizes the lives of civilians in Sudan and increases their misery, pointing out that the militia has previously devastated museums, mosques, churches, markets, schools and universities, and attacked public and private property, targeting the cultural and religious heritage of the Sudanese people.”
The official government spokesman underscored that these criminal acts contradict international efforts aimed at maintaining regional peace and security, and emphasize the need to hold the militia and the parties responsible for providing it with the strategic drones it uses to commit these crimes accountable, which are considered a barefaced violation of international humanitarian law, in accordance with the Geneva Conventions and protocols for vital facilities.
The official government spokesman added, “The Government of Sudan calls on all countries and human rights organizations to take urgent measures to classify the rebel RSF militia, its members, and its agents including countries, institutions and individuals as terrorist entities that are pursued and punished internationally”.
